A Family’s Journey with Spinal Cord Injury and SCI Awareness

Olivia Grace and Family

Olivia Grace (11 years old) suffered a spinal cord injury in December 2024 due to a rare spinal cord stroke. She is now a T8 paraplegic, paralyzed from the waist down. As our family has just begun this journey to become aware of spinal cord injuries and best ways to support Olivia, we have encountered an overwhelming flood of emotions and responses: Fear of the unknown, gratitude for our family, community, and medical teams, loneliness, togetherness, love, sadness, anger, joy, exhaustion, perseverance, and sometimes feeling lost in a sea of information, resources, or lack of both. What a ride it’s already been.

Why We’re Here

We have learned a tremendous amount in a short time, thanks to SCI survivors who share their experiences in support groups, knowledgable and experienced medical staff, and the ability to seek out quality information (did we mention a sea of information?!). But there’s so much more to learn, do, and share with others. And that’s why we’re here. We can’t do this alone - we don’t do this alone - and we have quickly realized that Spinal Cord Injury Awareness is lacking in many areas, especially in small, rural communities like the one we call home. Because of this lack of awareness and lack of experience unique to spinal cord injuries, we want to not only educate ourselves and advocate to give Olivia Grace the best chance at having a fulfilling, independent, life of dignity, but we want to share with others that knowledge so they don’t feel so alone, either. We aren’t experts; we’re information seekers and sharers.

Thank You!

We really appreciate the support and we hope others will find some of our shared information useful as they become aware of the uniqueness of spinal cord injuries, especially those on their own personal journey’s with SCIs.
